The President's Last Bang

  • PRESIDENT'S LAST BANG GEUDDAE GEUSARAMD (DVD MOVIE)

In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Hee’s presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge political and social cost.

South Korea’s political landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park government’s obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerf! ul conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ€"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ€"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.

This landmark volume examines South Korea’s era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Korea’s trajectory from poverty to a sustainable high rate of economic growth.

BURNING BED - DVD MovieThis controversial, 1984 made-for-television movie gave Farrah Fawcett her first true showcase as an actress. Playing an abused wife who kills her monstrous husband (Paul Le Mat), Fawcett demonstrates a facility with the moral ambiguities of the story, which concerns the painful but fascinating questions of where justice lies. Fine support from Richard Masur and Grace Zabriskie, and the assured direction is by Robert Greenwald (Xanadu. --Tom Keogh

Alana Stewart and Farrah Fawcett went through it all together. Friends for thirty years, they were an essential part of each other's lives since first meeting at a dinner party in the 1970s. During that time, they supported each other through the trials of Hollywood life while also raising their families, keeping in close contact.

But in the fall of 2006, a test of their friendship arose unlike any other they'd faced: Fa! rrah was diagnosed with aggressive rectal cancer. She was dete! rmined t o fight, and Alana was determined to help her. Together, they were relentless in their pursuit of a cure, traveling halfway around the world as they sought every mainstream, alternative, and experimental therapy available. In all, they spent the better part of the next three years together - Alana by her friend's side as they struggled hand in hand with the unknown.

Now, in these intimate and personal diaries, Alana shares her thoughts on the events of the last three years, documenting the journey she and Farrah embarked on as they prayed for a miracle. Reflecting back on the three decades they shared, Alana details what she's learned about her friend and herself as they battled through the trials of this illness. From the importance of selflessness, to the undeniable value of faith, to the remarkable resilience of the human spirit, Alana's day-to-day entries reveal a side of these two friends that the world has never seen. Even in the face of this debilitating disea! se, Farrah's courage and determination continues to teach us about life . . . and love.

Writing candidly about aging, marriage, motherhood, and faith--all topics she and Farrah dealt with together over the years - Alana provides a moving tribute to a woman, once Hollywood's golden girl, and an inspiring celebration of life. My Journey with Farrah is the story of two courageous women who stood by each other through good times, bad times, and now the most trying of times. It is a book that will make people laugh, cry, and rejoice in the power of friendship.

In a "riveting performance" (The Hollywood Reporter) that stunned critics and audiences alike, Farrah Fawcett is the heart and soul of this "edge-of-your-seat suspense drama" (The Film Journal) about a woman who turns the tables on a would-be rapist. Nominated* for a Golden Globe, Fawcett "is genuine, pathetic and heroic here" (Los Angeles Times) and her "unadorned artistry singes" (Time)! After narrowly escap! ing an attempted rape, Marjorie (Fawcett) is haunted by the fa! ct that her attacker (James Russo) knows where she lives. But when he appears on her doorstep and subjects her to a non-stop barrage of physical and mental assaults, Marjorie manages to disarm and capture him. Filled with fear and hostility, she conspires with her roommates (Diana Scarwid and Alfre Woodard) to take the law into their own hands. But as her rage consumes her, Marjorie shocks her friends with a proposal that challenges the perilously thin line between justice and vengeance. *1986: Actress in a Leading RoleThis controversial, 1984 made-for-television movie gave Farrah Fawcett her first true showcase as an actress. LOVE LETTER - DVD MovieIts ads portrayed it as a wacky farce, while critics largely ignored it, presuming it to be a vanity project from Kate Capshaw (better known as Mrs. Steven Spielberg). But The Love Letter is neither; on the contrary, it's a low-key but surprisingly rich and touching film about love, illusions, and regret. Helen (Capshaw), a bookseller in a small seashore town, discovers an unsigned love letter that's fallen into the cushions of a couch in her store. The lette! r doesn't say who it's for, but Helen assumes it's for her and starts wondering who sent it. One would expect this to lead to a whirling comedy of mistaken identities, but after some amusing daydream moments, the movie follows its story with subtlety and nuance. The characters behave according to their own needs and desires, rather than the demands of standard Hollywood goofiness. The performances--from a cast including Tom Selleck (In and Out), Tom Everett Scott (That Thing You Do), Ellen DeGeneres (EDtv), newcomer Julianne Nicholson, and others--are uniformly unforced and natural. Viewers weary of the hyped-up, absurd emotional climaxes of most so-called romantic comedies will find a respite here. A super adventure of heroic proportions, this crowd-pleasing hit from Walt Disney Pictures stars Hollywood favorites Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston! The son of legendary heroes Commander (Russell) and Jetstream (Preston), young Will Stronghold carries huge expectations as he enters a high-tech high school known for molding the heroes of tomorrow. With no apparent superpowers of his own, however, Will seems destined to grow up a mere sidekick. But as he discovers his true strengths, he'll also learn ! that it takes loyalty and teamwork to truly become a hero! The idea of a high school for superheroes will appeal to teens and preteens, who struggle powerlessly with petty authoritarians, bullying peers, and their own rampant hormones, and Sky High spotlights young Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano, Lords of Dogtown), the son of top-of-the-heap superheroic couple the Commander (Kurt Russell, Tango & Cash) and Josie Jetstream (Kelly Preston, View from the Top). Unfortunately, though he's about to be dropped into the midst of kids who can stretch, turn to living stone, or shoot fire, Will has yet to develop any powers at all--and may never develop them. His development anxieties (and some entertaining metaphors for high school social hierarchies) contrast with a bubbling plot by an old foe of the Commander's to destroy Sky High and all of superhero-dom. Sky High has a great supporting cast (including Bruce Campbell, Army of Darkness; D! ave Foley, NewsRadio; Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman! ; and Cl oris Leachman, Young Frankenstein) and a handful of funny, offhand bits, but the bulk of the movie is bland and obvious. Younger kids may not mind the clumsy action scenes, generic dialogue, and tacky production design, but even comic-book-loving teenagers will label Sky High bargain-basement. --Bret Fetzer

British professor Guy Pringle (Kenneth Branagh) arrives in Romania with his new bride, Harriet (Emma Thompson) and becomes enmeshed in the politics of anti-fascism. Despite Harriet's serious misgivings, Guy's social circle soon includes members of the British Secret Service who want to involve him in dangerous missions, and a downtrodden prince who zeroes in on Guy's generous nature and winds up living with the Pringles. Thus the stage is set for this mesmerizing story of marriage tested by accidental betrayal, callous insensitivity, and a world in upheaval. Based upon the autobiographical novels of best-selling aut! hor Olivia Manning, and set in places as far-flung as Buchares! t, Athen s and Cairo, Fortunes of War is majestic in both its scope and its vision."Wherever we are, that will always be the center of things." So professor Guy Pringle reassures his new wife, Harriet. Unfortunately, where they are is Bucharest in 1939, with the Nazis gathering on the border, and fascism casting longer, darker shadows. Thus begins this epic 1987 miniseries based on Olivia Manning's Balkan and Levant trilogies that was originally broadcast in the United States on Masterpiece Theatre. For most Americans, it was an auspicious first look at England's glamorous former First Thespian couple, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, who, as one character notes of Harriet, "lightens the darkness." Fortunes of War suggests what Casablanca might have been like had it followed Victor and Ilsa instead of Rick, who famously didn't want to stick his neck out for anybody. Not Guy. "I want to do something more dramatic than lecturing," he proclai! ms. "It is our duty to shine a little light to hope someone notices." His activities are enough to put him on a Nazi death list, forcing Guy and Harriet to Greece and Egypt. "It isn't a lark," Guy tells Harriet early on, "but it is an adventure." Fortunes of War is populated by colorful characters, most notably the pitiable and decidedly untrustworthy Prince Yakimov (Ronald Pickup), and the dashing young soldier Simon Boulderstone (Rupert Graves of The Forsythe Saga and A Room with a View). There is plenty of intrigue, betrayals, domestic melodrama, and emotional separations and reunions to propel this nearly seven-hour production to its powerful conclusion. Readers of Manning's books and Branagh and Thompson fans will find the release of War good fortune indeed. --Donald Liebenson

Friday the 13th (Extended Killer Cut)

  • A man in search of his missing sister stumbles across a deadly secret in the woods surrounding Crystal Lake as Texas Chainsaw Massacre redux duo Michael Bay and Marcus Nispel resurrect one of the silver screen's most feared slashers -- machete-wielding, hockey mask-wearing madman Jason Voorhees. The last time Clay heard from his sister, she was headed toward Crystal Lake. There, amidst the creaky
Art of Fighting star Jae Hee makes a welcome return to the big screen in the 2008 supernatural action thriller Mandate. His last film before heading to the military, Jae Hee plays a sword-wielding ghost hunter chasing after a manipulative serial murderer. Helmed by Park Hee Joon, who previously directed the genre-bending Pan-Asian actioner Dream of a Warrior, Mandate keeps viewers on the edge of the seat with exciting action, ghostly scares, and a mind-twisting case. The film co-stars Yoo Da In (Cind! erella) and Shim Won Cheol (Underground Rendezvous). There has been a serial murderer and rapist on the loose in Whagoklee over the past decade. With the police unable to make heads or ends of the case, most of the town's residents have moved away over the years, leaving Whagoklee in disarray. After two years of relative peace, death and terror strike the town again when two college girls are raped and killed. The police are again at a lost, but this time a mysterious ghost hunter (Jae Hee) rolls into town claiming that the murderer is actually an evil spirit.Finding your roots in the hood ain't easy. An accidental switch at an adoption agency sends a Chinese baby to an African-American family. Julian is accepted into the family and his tight-knit Atlanta neighborhood, but the search for a better life takes the family to South Central L.A., where his new neighbors think Julian is pretending to be black. For the first time in his life, Julian faces an identity crisis. "Fakin' da Funk" pokes fun at stereotypes and proves that wh! at's in your heart is what's important.FRIDAY THE 13TH:KILLER CUT - DVD MovieIf you thought a bigger budget and an A-list producer (Michael Bay) would go to Jason's head, well, forget it. The indestructible villain of so many bottom-of-the-barrel shockers isn't about to change his shtick, and the 2009 Friday the 13th proves it. This, the umpteenth sequel (nope, it's not a remake of the origin story) to the original 1980 movie, gives us a clever prologue that manages to fit an entire Jason Voorhees killing spree in a brisk and bloody 20 minutes. Jumping ahead six weeks, the film introduces a carload of clueless teens headed for a weekend at a lakeside cabin, plus a lone motorcyclist (Jared Padalecki) in search of his missing sister (Amanda Righetti). When the "lakeside" happens to refer to Crystal Lake, of course, there can be only one outcome. Cue the hockey mask, and pass the machete. Bay and director Marcus Nispel, who collaborated on the Texas Chainsaw Massa! cre remake, are surprisingly indifferent to changing up t! he formu la this time, although there's more care taken in building up a few characters, and for once the comic relief (mostly supplied by Aaron Yoo and Arlen Escarpeta) is pretty funny. You might even regret the slaughter of a couple of these young folk, which is an unusual feeling in Friday-watching. The film's Jason is quite the athletic fellow, and he's assembled an elaborate underground corpse-hiding lair in the vicinity of Crystal Lake. How he's been able to live down there for 30 years (if the film's own timeline is to be believed) and had enough unwitting campers pass by to keep himself entertained is anybody's guess. But if they keep coming, he'll keep slashing. --Robert Horton

Also on the disc
The extended Killer Cut is 106 minutes compared to 97 for the theatrical cut, and it's hard to imagine choosing to watch the theatrical cut if you have a choice. In addition to some more of Amanda Righetti and of Jason, the extra nine minutes is mostly m! ore gore in the gory scenes and more sex in the sexy scenes. If you're squeamish you might not want those things, but if you're that squeamish you probably don't want to watch Friday the 13th in the first place, right? The longer cut will give you more of the stuff that you probably watch this movie for. There's also an 11-minute featurette on the new movie and three deleted scenes (a different version of Jason getting his mask, the police response to the phone call, and a revised climax). --David Horiuchi

Sherry is a young woman with a history of drug abuse & emotional turmoil. Just out of prison she finds herself struggling against all odds to reconnect with her estranged 5-year-old daughter while trying to readjust to the outside world. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 01/23/2007 Starring: Maggie Gyllenhaal Brad William Henke Run time: 96 minutes Rating: RA disturbing film about a recovering drug addict trying to regain control of her life, Sherrybaby succinctly depicts what can happen when want and desire aren't offset by control. In this bleak indie film, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Stranger Than Fiction, Secretary) has just been released from a three-year stint in prison. Dressed in her inappropriate uniform of a halter top and oh-so-high platform heels, she goes to brother's house to see her 5-year-old daughter, Lexie (Ryan Simp! kins). Sherry is determined to be a mother to her child, but without a home, job, or any other form of stability, she grows frustrated and jealous of her brother and sister-in-law's roles in Lexie's life. Tall and willowy, Gyllenhaal brings a sad desperation and simmering sexuality to the role. Sherry's middle-class childhood was a blur of sex and drugs, and she seems incapable of breaking out of that destructive trap. While the script by first-time feature film director Laurie Collyer isn't wholly original, the picture moves at a good pace, giving insight as to why Sherry's resigned to using sex to get what she wants. While the family secret doesn't come as a complete surprise, it is somewhat perplexing that no one addresses it. Ultimately, it's Gyllenhaal who makes you care about a character that most people would've given up on. --Jae-Ha KimLee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has a few strikes against her when she applies for a secretarial position at the law office ! of E. Edward Grey (James Spader). At first the work seems quit! e normal but soon, in between typing, filing and coffee making, Lee and Mr. Grey embark on a more personal relationship together, crossing the lines of conduct that would give any human resource director the vapors! This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-right! eous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret FetzerHigh quality import edition, manufactured in Brazil . Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 02/01/2011 Run time: 85 minutes Rating: NrThe Client List features a great performance by Jennifer Love Hewitt and a whole lot of prurient guilty pleasure. It's a perfect chick popcorn film--and because of The Client List's subject matter, more than a few men will enjoy it too. The Client List is based on a true story, which manages to give Hewitt's character, Samantha, some sympathy amid the silliness. Samantha is a former Texas homecoming queen, the purtiest girl in her small hometown, who wed Rex (Teddy Sears), a former high-school football star. And Samantha's mama, Cassie, is played by Cybill Shepherd in a very canny and welcome ! supporting role.

The Client List opens with Samantha and Rex facing some serious financial hardships in the recession, with three small children to support and Rex's inability to work (which is never really explained). As the financial noose threatens to tighten around this all-American family, Samantha decides her only solution is to take a job at the local massage parlor. Yes, that kind of massage parlor. It's never quite clear why Samantha doesn't consider barista, say, or cashier instead of prostitute as her recession career, but that's part of the fun of The Client List. When the police crack down, as they eventually always do, Samantha must weigh turning in the client list of the title--which could change the landscape of her small town forever. Hewitt really does give a good performance; she's lovely and even believable in the sometimes-absurd plot. The Client List may not win awards, but it's absolutely compelling and thoroughly enjoya! ble watching. --A.T. HurleyHow can a best friend become! a guy's best girl? Now Hewitt shares the real story of what she's learned navigating the dangerous dating waters.

In The Day I Shot Cupid, Hewitt offers her hard-won wisdom and tells us how to embrace love with both feet on the ground. Funny, quirky, and empowering, The Day I Shot Cupid deserves a place on every woman's nightstand, bookshelf, or coffee table, or tucked inside her oversized designer handbag.

THE ISLE mixes erotica and art in the tradition of classic Asian art house horror films like AUDITION, CURE and Hideo Nakata's THE RING, as well as NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE EXORCIST, all films full of sex, blood, mutilation, relationship power-plays, nudity and parody.

THE ISLE is a remote fishing ground where people go to forget their deepest problems. It's an unearthly locale crouched in awe-inducing early-morning light. The lodgings are a series of small huts floating on an isolated lake and managed by Hee-Jin, a woman who lives alone without speaking, who sells food, beer, night crawlers, and often her body, to the vacationing fishermen. One day, a mysterious man named Hyun-Shik arrives, and before long, Hee-Jin becomes obsessed with the former police officer...

Unfortunately, his grandmother is ailing, his cat constantly runs away, his mother spends most of her time with her new boyfriend, and, to top it all off, his best friend is moving to Seoul! Overwhelmed by feelings of abandonment, Nam-woo escapes into a fantastic dream world where he meets the mysterious Mari. As two young boys discover the true meaning of friendship, they must also learn the difference between fantasy and reality. With stunning visuals and a haunting score, My Beautiful Girl, Mari, will enchant and mesmer! ize you.Legend has it, if you climb the 28 stairs leading to t! he schoo l dormitory and count each step aloud, a 29th step will appear and a spirit will grant you a wish. If your intentions are honorable, your wish can be a blessing of good fortune. But at this high school, where paranoia and jealousy reign supreme, malicious wishes are about to unleash an unspeakable evil. Be careful what you wish for; some wishes were never meant to be granted. The South Korean "Ghost School" trilogy comes to a close with Wishing Stairs, a typically creepy example of modern Asian horror. First-time director Yoon Jae-Yeon was fresh out of film school when she signed on for this commercial assignment, and her rookie status makes this a lesser entry in the "Asian Extreme" genre, following the trilogy's previous installments, Whispering Corridors and Memento Mori. Still, fine performances and attention to psychological detail make this an effectively eerie study of peer pressure, classroom cruelty, and blind ambition in a girls' art school, whe! re three aspiring ballerinas make fateful wishes upon an enchanted staircase (or is it cursed?) near their school. According to legend, if you climb the 28 steps and count each step aloud, a 29th step will magically appear and a fox-spirit will grant your wish. Fierce competition, paranoia, and malicious intentions make these "wishing stairs" a recipe for disaster, when one girl commits suicide and another wishes for her revival. At that point, Wishing Stairs employs standard-issue horror techniques that will be familiar to anyone who's seen Ju-On or the Japanese version of Dark Water (including the ghostly girl with long black hair). For patient viewers, the film's frightful climax comes not a moment too soon. A comprehensive "making of" documentary is included, including interview clips with primary cast and crew. --Jeff Shannon(Horror) Originally titled To Sir With Love, Bloody Reunion is Lim Dae-wung’s Korean slasher about a group of young ! people who reunite with their now wheel-chair bound teacher. ! The happ y gathering turns into a nightmare as old grudges and hidden truths surface and one by one the former classmates vanish in a series of unforgettably gruesome murders.

Follow the journey of one of fashion’s most creative collaborations, from early days backstage at the shows to behind-the-scenes glimpses of the ground-breaking editorials they continue to produce for the world’s most respected magazines. Many photographs have been chose! n from Testino’s private archive and are published here for the first time.

This book is Mario’s personal homage to his greatest muse: a young girl that captured his heart and eye with her beauty, humor and spirit, and whose image in his photographs has captured imaginations the world over.

• Over 100 images in black-and-white and color, including many unseen private photographs

An international trendsetter with an influence more powerful than any fashion magazine, Kate Moss is a one-woman style revolution who kick-starts global trends with each new look. She has made wearing vintage cool, dressing for festivals a headlining act in itself, and looking sexily disheveled a serious style statement. This look inside the most famous wardrobe in the world unravels the secrets of Kate Moss’s fashion formula by uncovering ! the stories behind her most iconic outfits, including the infa! mous she er silver slip dress, the much-coveted lemon yellow prom dress, and the rock chick PVC leggings. Contributions from some of the most noted fashion designers, stylists, photographers, and vintage dealers in the industryâ€"among them Manolo Blahnik, Donna Karan, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna (Dolce & Gabbana), Matthew Williamson, Kelly Osbourne, Britt Ekland, Katie Grand, and Marc Jacobsâ€"help reveal how Kate chooses what she wears and why. Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of photos Kate’s iconic style campaigns and famous outfits, this is a celebration of a unique life in fashion that explores in-depth the evolution and impact of Kate’s look.
The turbulent times of one of the world's most beautiful women.

Kate Moss entered the modeling scene with a force that belied her fragile frame. Discovered completely by chance at New York's JFK airport, Moss was propelled to international stardom with her waif-like figure and hauntingly seducti! ve features, launching the infamous "heroin chic" look that dominated the modeling world of the nineties. But living the fast-paced life of an international sex symbol took its toll, and Moss spiraled down into the chaotic celebrity lifestyle of nonstop partying that landed her first in the tabloids, then in rehab. Here, for the first time, is the shocking true story of the passion and pain hiding behind one of the most famous faces in the world.July 2005. In the Pyrenees mountains near Carcassonne, Alice, a volunteer at an archaeological dig, stumbles into a cave and makes a startling discovery-two crumbling skeletons, strange writings on the walls, and the pattern of a labyrinth.

Eight hundred years earlier, on the eve of a brutal crusade that will rip apart southern France, a young woman named Alais is given a ring and a mysterious book for safekeeping by her father. The book, he says, contains the secret of the true Grail, and the ring, inscribed with a labyr! inth, will identify a guardian of the Grail. Now, as crusading! armies gather outside the city walls of Carcassonne, it will take a tremendous sacrifice to keep the secret of the labyrinth safe.

The Answer Man

  • From first-time writer-director John Hindman, comes The Answer Man, a romantic comedy starring Jeff Daniels (The Squid and the Whale) and Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) about love and the search for meaning. Arlen Faber (Daniels) is the reclusive and misanthropic author of "Me and God," a book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages.
Arlen Faber (Jeff Daniels) is the
reclusive author of Me and God, a
book that has redefined spirituality for an entire generation and has been translated into over 100 languages. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of his still wildly popular book, Arlen is still sought after as the man who has all the answers. Arlen's life collides with Elizabeth (Lauren Graham), a single mom raising her seven-year-old son, and Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci), a young man fresh out of rehab who is searching for meaning! . Both Elizabeth and Kris are hopeful that Arlen has the answers, but the truth is, he hasn't got a clue.Jeff Daniels shines as a know-it-all who really doesn't in The Answer Man, a 2009 romantic comedy whose predictability does very little to detract from its overall charm. Daniels plays Arlen Faber, author of Me and God, a mega-selling tome in which he asks some tough existential questions ("Does prayer work?" "I don't believe in you. Now what?"), with the answers allegedly dictated by the Almighty himself. The book led to numerous spinoffs (The Me and God Diet, anyone?), but as the 20th anniversary of its publication nears, Faber is a reclusive misanthrope who tosses fan mail aside without a glance, swears a lot, and utters pithy aphorisms that are a good deal less charitable than before ("Hell is other people"). He also has a back problem, which one day brings him to chiropractor Elizabeth (Lauren Graham), a single mom who works wonders on Arlen's s! pine but, amazingly, has never heard of him; she in turn buys ! the book at a shop owned by Kris (Lou Taylor Pucci), who's just out of alcohol rehab and about to lose his store to his many creditors. That the lives of these three, especially Arlen and Elizabeth (as well as her winning young son), will soon become intertwined is hardly a revelation; nor is the fact that Arlen, for all his wisdom, is a self-conscious doofus who can barely express his own feelings. But writer-director John Hindman's screenplay has some excellent dialogue, and while some of the situations are overly silly and facile, Hindman goes easy on the more cutesy and cloying aspects (an ongoing bit involving Ella Fitzgerald's recording of "Isn't It Romantic" is most amusing). It's not As Good as It Gets, but The Answer Man is just fine. --Sam Graham
